Newport Athletic Club

The Munster inter county relays took place in very wet, cold and windy circuit just outside Killarney. Three age groups represented the club in the U10, U12 and U14.

First up was  the U10 event, with Emma Coleman taking up the first leg for Tipperary. Emma ran a strong race and battled through the strong winds very well to set Tipperary up to hold a comfortable position and and enabled them to secure third place overall following an excirting race.

Next up was the U12 where Tipperary did not get off to a great start and running on the fourth leg Emma Fagan had some ground to make up to pull Tipperary into third position. Emma timed her run very well and made her move on the second of two 250m laps to close in on the third position Clare athlete to leave only centimetres between them on the line.

Next up were the U14 team which had a slightly easier start and a certain third place position. However Elaine Yelverton was not settling for third and put in an impressive performance to pull back into second place eating up the ground nicely over the two laps.

Overall a great result with all three athletes bringing home medals for their efforts.

Winner

Both Patrick and Conor Lynch competed in the Junior mens events. Both athletes ran very well with Patrick just missing out on a place in the final for the 60m. Conor also ran very well considering this was his first year competing as a Junior.

Patrick won his heat in the 200m competition but unfortunately his time was outside of the overall medals. Good results overall from two capable athletes.

The All Ireland Uneven Cross Country Championships took place in the Curragh. Again a tough race was anticipated on the race calendar and this competition did not disappoint. The conditions on the day were very good with dry weather and a reasonably flat course to contend with.

Emma Coleman was our only representative for the event running one year out of her age group. Emma ran a very good race and put in an excellent challenge among formidable competition and held her own to finish in 44 position.

This was a very credible result especially since this was and Emma’s first all Ireland competition, watch this space…

 

Winner

Well done to all the Newport athletes who competed in the County B cross-country championships in Moyne.

Again weather conditions were difficult for this event with plenty of rain and near freezing temperatures to contend with.  

First race away was the girls U10 with both Ellen Brennan  Blathnaid Ryan putting in good performances on the day.

Next up were the boys U10 where Adam Ryan ran a very good race finishing in third place overall a great result.

The girls U12 had the biggest number of athletes representing the club with eight in total. All eight ran very well with Roisin Allen picking up first place leading the race from the line and holding this position for the entire race with Gillian Lyons coming in a strong second and Laura Deegan an impressive sixth and all three combining to take the first team medal.

Lisa McKeogh, Faye Berry, Beth Quilligan Ryan, Abbey Storan and  Ali O’Sullivan also ran a great race taking the third team award on the day with Lias and Faye also picking up individual medals.

 Boys U12 were out next  where James Lynch Cathal  Ryan Robert Duggan and Colin Coleman all ran very well with James picking up 8th position to earn an individual medal.

 

Great result from all the athletes who took part, who can now look forward to a well-earned rest for Christmas.

The All Ireland Cross Country Championships took place in Sligo racecourse. This is one of the biggest and toughest races on the race calendar and this competition was no exception. The conditions on the day were very good but a rain-soaked course and long drag to the finish provided for a demanding circuit.

Both Emma Fagan and Emma Flanagan ran exceptionally well in the U12 event and given that this was Emma Flanagans first ever all Ireland competition experience, she did very well and held her own among a strong field of over 140 athletes. Emma Fagan having had the experience from last years all Ireland managed to stay in contention throughout the race to finish in 16th place overall securing a place on the Munster team who were in gold position. Tipperary county were unlucky to finish in fourth position overall.

Congratulations to both girls who showed great determination and commitment and did the club proud.

Congratulations to all of the Newport athletes who competed in the Munster B cross-country championships.

Again this competition resulted in mixed fortunes for the club with some good results and some more unfortunate mishaps.

In the U9 boys James Allen put in an a great run winding up the pace to finish in a strong 11th position to secure an individual medal.

Emma Coleman was less fortunate in the U11 event getting boxed in and tripped several times which knocked her completely out of her stride and finished off Emma’s chances of a top 12 finish. This was the re run of the Clonmel A race combined with the B group, so the field of athletes was even bigger than Clonmel making for a much more difficult race.

Niamh Cryan, Ruth Allen, Melanie Bonfield and Rachele Bonfield made amends in the B race with some impressive running and some excellent individual results

The U13 girls race  also  fortunately had  good success where Sarah Fagan, Emma Flanagan, Thea Curtin, Roisin Allen and Laura Deegan ran a good race earning third club and first County which was great result for the club.

Congratulations to all of the Newport athletes who competed in the Munster cross-country championships.

Despite the favourable weather conditions ,this was a day of mixed fortunes for the club with many unfotunate incidents and decisions conspiring to upset the Newport hopes for the day.

Aimee Hayde ran an excellent race in the girls U9 finishing 22, earning a bronze team medal for Tipperary.

Ben O’Sullivan was the first casualty of the day getting pulled by another athlete and forcing him out of the boys U9 race. James Allen finished well in this race managing to avoid any trouble.

The girls U11 race was ruled void owing to an invalid start decision. This was very disappointing since Emma Coleman ran a well timed race finishing in 9 place. Niamh Cryan, Ruth Allen, Faye Berry, Melanie Bonfield, Rachel Bonfield and Chantelle Ryan also competed in this event and all ran very well. The Ull race will be re run in Limerick Sunday 20th.

Emma Fagan, Elaine Yelverton, Sarah Fagab,Thea Curtin, Emma Flanagan and Laura Deegan took part in the girls U13 race. Again this event brought misfortune to the Newport side with Emma Flanagan falling victim to the starting stampede, receiving an early trampeling but still managing to get back into the race. All athletes performed well and finished strongly.

 

Last up Niamh Yelverton  took part in the intermediate event and managed to finish well in this tough race.

Congratulations to all of the Newport athletes who competed at the inter club county relays.

Weather conditions were unusually good for the event with perfect sunshine and no wind making for an ideal combination for the competition. A good turnout from the club made for great competition and support both equally important. 

First off were the girls U10 with Aimee Hayde, Aislinn Deegan, Rachel Bonfield and Emma Coleman combining to put in a gallant performance with all athletes running very well but unfortunately did not make it into the medals.

Next up were the U10 boys with James Allen, Dylan Ryan, Adam Ryan and Ben O’Sullivan all putting in a fine performance and unlucky to finish outside the medals also.

Three teams represented the girls U12 of Roisin Allen, Thea Curtin, Emma Flanagan, Emma Fagan, Laura Deegan, Ruth Allen, Melanie Bonfield, Niamh Cryan, Gillian Lyons, Faye Berry, Beth Quilligan Ryan and Lisa McKeogh with all three teams running extremely well with one of the teams earning a hard-fought second place .  It is a great sign of the growing strength of the club to see such a turnout for this event.

Representing the boys U12 were Cathal Ryan, Colin Coleman, Robert Duggan and James Lynch. Again all four ran a brave and spirited race but were unlucky not to finish in medal position.

Last up were the girls U14 with Aislann Duffy, Elaine Yelverton, Sarah Fagan and Maria Carey.  All four girls ran very well and with the top three positions changing multiple times, a fine run from Maria Carey was enough to pull the team into second position overall.

Congratulations to all of the Newport athletes who competed in the Munster cross-country championships.

The competition took place in very challenging conditions which got progressively worse throughout the day. Despite the tough conditions our Newport athletes performed well with Emma Coleman adapting well to a fast pace to finish in 8 place in the under U10 among stiff competition earning an individual medal. Chantelle Ryan also had a good race and performed well in her first Munster competition.

 

Emma Fagan, Thea Curtin, Emma Flanagan, Roisin Allen and Niamh Cryan all performed well in the U12 with Emma Fagan taking up an early lead at one stage and finishing in an impressive 6 place in a race where the pace picked up in the second half. 

 

Elaine Yelverton (U14) ran an impressive race finishing second home for Tipperary and 20th position overall.

 

Both Mike (U23) and Niamh (Novice) Yelverton braved the worsening track conditions in the 6k and 3k route respectively to finish well among a highly competitive field.
